My Dad was a farmer, and as a boy I sometimes helped him in our family garden.  I went on to teach high school science and biology for over thirty years. This included advanced placement environmental science and I wrote the curriculum for horticulture at Quincy High School in Quincy Massachusetts.  As a horticulture teacher in the City of Quincy, I worked with students developing projects related to urban gardening.  I have enjoyed practicing many of the same principles at home.  My attention has been drawn to sustainability and the issues of keeping us all healthy.

When a colleague of mine suggested that I read Square Foot Gardening, I got the book and read it and could not put it down.  We can all complain about environmental toxins and the poor quality of our food.  However you and I can make a difference; “1 Square Foot at a Time”.  We can come together and practice good science and good living and it is easier than you may think.

  1. I wish that more people grew some of their food. Looks like you are doing a great job educating about how to do just that. I am looking forward to reading more as I follow your blog!

    1. Sarah, We are gaining ground all over the world. It takes people like you and me to get others to believe – One Square Foot at a Time. The One Square foot doesn’t really represent garden space however it represents people who are will to grow and eat organically. If I influence two people and you do as well, we would hope that those people can influence two more each. Thank you for your blogs as well. Together we can do this.

      1. I do hope to influence more people in my area to garden and to grow at least some of their own food. I think many are intimidated by the idea or discouraged by past failures. I try to provide helpful information and encouragement. Looks as though you are doing the same.

  2. Isn’t it wonderful when what you deem to be an inner desire unfolds into a much bigger blossom than you could imagine? Congratulations on sharing what you know to be helpful with others to keep food healthy and clean. Thank you.
