Wednesday evening I judged the Quincy High School Science Fair. It was good to see friends and former students. One of my former tennis players recently had a baby boy. I told her that I was involved doing Square Foot Gardening and that I am concerned about the foods that we are feeding ourselves and our children.
She agreed and commented, “that is why there is Wholefoods”. Yes Bridget, for those that can afford to buy organic that works. And let’s take a look at a bigger picture.
The opportunity of course is hers. Starting a Square Foot Garden on the small piece of property that they currently have is going to provide much more than organic vegetables. *Children should be playing in the dirt. Please don’t allow your children to live in sterile environments. *They can learn how to care and respect things. *They will learn some science and math through hands on learning and the parent doesn’t need to be a teacher. *Parents will have an activity to do with their child / children and get them away from the television and outside. *They can learn about reusing, composting and social responsibility. *There are foods that I never ate until I grew them – teaching good nutrition factors into this.
Parents and Grandparents: the choice is yours.
